Most Amazing Hobby

     Most Amazing Hobby.

'Thy word is my meditation all the day long. Psalm 119:97'

It's a well known fact that all and sundry have a peculiar hobby. For some, it's reading, writing, sight seeing, playing football or other games, whatever it is, I strongly believe it gives us satisfaction.

While some hobbies are worthwhile, others can be harmful especially if the pursuit of it distracts one from profitable exercises. With the social media outlets being the order of the day, the quality of time believers give to spiritual things have dwindled. Perhaps that explains why there is no life in our services.
The commonest excuse is that pastors alone are the ones with the calling to read and study the scripture. However, God calls every Christian to pay attention to His word irrespective of their profession.

'This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, thou shalt meditate therein.....and thou shall make thy way prosperous' Joshua 1:8

In essence, believers' prosperity is closely tied to the level of attention given to the word of God. Choosing the daily reading of the bible as our hobby then is giving attention to what really matters.

Do I need to expose the benefit of the scripture? I believe we all know it but have been unable to practice what we know because we are yet to make a conscious decision and effort to  pursue it. The ultimate reason for studying the scripture is that God speaks to us through His word. 'God who has in time past and in diverse manner spoken to the fathers through the prophets hath in this last days spoken to us through His Son whom He appointed heirs of all things' Hebrew 1:1. Many a times, believers complain of not knowing the mind of God about different areas of their life, they are confused about who to marry?, where to go?, which job offer to accept? and they respond by moving from pillars to post, consulting unknown prophets for ready made answers. Yet, the known Teacher is speaking through His word but they've refused to listen.

You be the judge, when last did you practice your hobbies? I bet you do that often. Then, how come reading the scriptures has become a weekly routine done only in church? When last did you study for more understanding rather than for fresh knowledge to share? As good as it is to study the scriptures, it is also Important we do it for the right reasons.

While my motive is not to insult or condemn, I write because I believe there is a need to pay attention to what really matters. Believe me, the dividend is great if you read a chapter of the scripture per day. Nothing satisfies better than the time set apart each day to fellowship with God. It has been proven that the time sacrificed in the pursuit of intimacy with God is never lost. Every other things shall pass, money shall be spent. Relationship shall grow cold, time and season will pass but God's word remains the same.

If you know the meaning of true security, then I need not sweat my way into making you believe that God's word is profiting. You can take it each day at a time, and you get better each passing day.

As for me, it's my goal to read the bible through this year. The journey hasn't been easy, there has been days I failed to read a verse but there's  been days I forget other things 'cos am lost in the scripture. Whatever it is that i've experienced in this path, giving up isn't an option. I'm daily learning to give due consideration to my bible just like I do to my meals. I'm getting better at it and am enjoying every bits of the failed efforts especially when l doze off while at it. However this is certain, am reading it through this year.

I've shared my struggle so that you will not be discouraged each time it's looking like you are failing. The main thing is to never toss the bible aside but talking every new day as a fresh start. Remember, it is God who works in you both to Will and to Do of His good pleasure (Phil 2:13). Each attempt is important, you are the one grading yourself. God is looking at your thirst and faith.
No matter how tired you are, read one verse, if you are disturbed, read five verses. Do whatever it is, read as long or as wide as you want but never drop your bible. Trust me, that's the finest hobby to choose.

I end with this thought, when all have been spent and done away with, which hobby do you want to be your best?

Love you Big.
